Firefighters as terrorist hunters?

Filed under: Our World, politics,Warnings,Wordpress Political Blogs — iknowkeith @ 3:14 pm

A new plan is in the works to make firefighters the new detectives in search of potential terrorists in the United States.

One reason is that firefighters do not need warrants to enter a home and conduct a search. Therefore, they can identify a potential terrorist if they see a suspicious book, map, firearms, flight manuals, or little or no furniture other than a bed or mattress. Presumably, this would be during the normal home entry to save lives that they would normally do.

firefighterbadge.gifFirst of all, I would like to point out that training firefighters to be cops is not likely to identify terrorists as much as falsely accuse law abiding gun owners, flight students, and other Americans that should not be harassed. Lets face it, databases are not overly descriptive. When some gung-ho fireman makes a potential terrorist report, is there any real chance that this will not make the big terror suspect databases? That means a lot more non-terrorists will be on watch lists and no-fly lists than would be.

Also, the firefighters should be very wary of this breach of trust with the American people. If they actually stumble upon a real terrorist, odds are the terrorist will not look at them as lifesavers when they enter their home. Now firefighters will have to worry about being attacked or killed by the terrorists when they enter a home to save lives. How will firemen protect themselves? Does this mean firefighters should carry guns too?

Here is the original article.

  1. As a former paramedic in urban areas with heavy immigrant population groups I can tell you this is a big waste of money. First most “big city” depts know what some of the dangerous items are. Fire and EMS personnel are already trained in the concept of “scene safety” This is about noticing things that are harmful.I’d also say that the average pre event suicide bomber candidate is unlikely to call 911 for illness or injury. As for the FD if you got a bunch of RPGs sitting around and there is a need for the FD at your address I imagine you’d have left before your “luggage” started going off. Last all training aside.I know of a small town department that responded to a house fire. Just inside the door was a large container of dry cleaner solution. It was set to blow up the responders after they entered.Training and bureaucratic info data bases weren’t going to save them. The ineptness of the nutter is the only thing that let them go home that night.
