Sad news for democracy in Pakistan

Today in Pakistan, President Musharraf imposed emergency rule and suspended the constitution.

musharraf3.jpgAlthough I don’t agree with suspending a constitution because of a national emergency, I realize many people think this is acceptable. The part I don’t get is this:

“Troops have been deployed inside state-run TV and radio stations, while independent channels have gone off air.”

What kind of emergency required shutting down radio and TV (or posting troops to protect your message)?

All this does is show how much “democracy” in Pakistan is only a sham. The only reason to control the media is because a leader has lost public support and the government is falling apart.

Musharraf should step down from power, not destroy the government/constitution.

  2. “Troops have been deployed inside state-run TV and radio stations, while independent channels have gone off air.”

I expect we’ll shortly be seeing politicians and the mainstream press express their outrage over this violation of democracy and press freedom. After all, it would be totally hypocritical to condone or ignore Musharraf’s behaviour in Pakistan given the hysterical reaction to Chavez’ decision not to renew the public license of a TV station that openly supported a coup against him, wouldn’t it? Hmm…

  3. Not exactly a good situation, no matter which way you cut it. But I can see that gaining control of the media as a desperate measure in the broader goal of maintaining order.

Given the fact that Pakistan already appears to be in a semi-FUBAR state, I’m going to go ahead and support whatever measure is required to keep the nukes out of the hands of the fundies and radicals. If that means that makes Musharraf a dictator, at least he’s a sane dictator, and it’s got to be better than the alternative.
