New scandal may be brewing in CA

A storm could be coming for Gov. Schwarzenegger over the aerial spraying of Monterey county.

As you may have read in my earlier posts, there have now been 4 days of aerial pesticide spraying over some residential communities in California. The goal was to eliminate the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM) from the Monterey area before it spread to agricultural centers and potentially did over $100 million in damages.

The controversy is twofold. First, the spraying was done inspite of protests by the communittee and the unanimous vote of the city council to block the spray. Yeah, democracy! Second, although the maker of the spray (Suterra) assured us all it is completely safe it has not been tested fully by the EPA.

The whole thing seemed to make no sense until someone tracked down the money and brought this to my attention…

contributions-quote.jpgThe owner of Suterra is Stewart A. Resnick. Mr. Resnick is also among the top 100 campaign contributors to Governor Schwarzenegger, having contributed $144,000.

Maybe it is a coincidence. Maybe Arnold really did feel like spraying citizens with untested chemicals to prevent some other people from loosing money is a reasonable thing in a free society. Or… maybe this is an example of “owing something” to a contributor, no matter what the potential risk to human health.

I would also like to mention that there have been a number of reports (in local yahoo groups and the like) of people who developed irritated eyes, scratchy throats, etc on the morning after the first spraying. I also have had a sore throat that lasted for all three day of spraying over my house and has just gone away (no spray last night). Can any of us claim %100 that these symptoms are due to the spray? Of course not. But doesn’t it seem a bit wrong that we have to consider the possibility that the spray made us ill because the EPA has not tested the chemical?

There is already talk of repeating the spray next month. Personally, I am going to get out of town for the next one. But more importantly, this has to be stopped and an investigation should be conducted to see just how much corruption is involved.

  1. Yikes. That does seem like a bad deal.. I mean, if the county has a unanimous vote, you can’t just ignore that. Also, once the fact that this guy has his fingers in the spray makers’ company as well as Mr. Arnold’s campaign, the media is going to eat it up.

  2. Yeah, I’m sitting down here in Marina, and couldn’t believe how many passes of the planes we got. I did some more research about the moths and this particular treatment, and while I can see the reasoning behind wanting to eradicate the moths, the manner in which this happened is appalling.

When a community unanimously opposes something for very valid reasons, and state government persists in pushing it through, there is something very very wrong. We weren’t offered any objective information, opportunities to consider or even better, vote upon other options, and we couldn’t stop it from happening, despite the mayors practically begging for as least postponment, to allow for further study.

Thanks for posting about this – all but the local media seem to have not noticed, but in the research I did, it appears that we are not the first place in California to experience both this chemical spraying and blatant disregard of citizen’s rights. Keep talking about it – the second spraying was already planned before the first one began…

  3. What Yahoo group(s) are you referring to?
I have looking been a group dealing with this topic.
I think it would be a good way to organize people of the Monterey Peninsula.

  5. Find out the facts. Many untruths are being told. It may be a little shocking. If you want truth and Democracy “For The People” then go to LBAMspray.com and find out what is REALLY going on. There’s some stinky stuff going on and it’s not just the aerial spray. Hold your nose but keep reading. Some people have been following the money trail. It doesn’t look good. It’s time that truth be told.
Who owns Sulterra Inc? Who profits from the plan to Aerial Spray every man woman child and baby in California?
Assemblymember Mark Leno signed CASS to Stop the Spray. Santa Cruz city council and all 5 Santa Cruz supervisors have joined suit to fight the plan to aerial spray. Why do you think that is? Find out.

Albany city Council unanimously voted to ban aerial Spraying of this check mate stuff. Go to Sulterra and read the warning label yourself. read on LBAMspray.com what the unbiased scientists say about these chemicals. It isn’t pretty. Read the reports of real peole who had physical problems, breathing problems, asthma problems, eye burning, skin rashes. Some people are more sensitive than others and it was worse for them. Don’t de fooled it is NOT just a pheromone. In fact it isn’t really a pheromone. It’s a chemical mix trying to similate a pheromone. But the other ingrediants they call inert are really nasty chemicals. See for yourself. Did you know that the CDFA just hired a PR company at the cost of $500,000 to sway public opinion? Did you know that other countries do not consider this moth a danger. Did you know this Moth is only a harmless leaf roller that only nibbles and has not caused an significant damage anywhere in the world?
LBAMspray.com, ‘California Alliance to Stop the Spray’…. CASS.

  6. I am against the aerial spraying of any substance in our air that we breath. This has never been tested. They got the federal Government to help fund this. They got out of doing environmental reports and health reports by calling it an emergency. But it isn’t. How did such a harmless moth get catagorized as a dangerous pest when it hasn’t done any significant damage?

Did you know that 97% of people in prison ate TOMATOES at some time in their life! Data can be used in lots of skewed ways making anything look how we want it to look for our own purposes. This has happened here. Get the facts. You will be glad you did. It may not make you happy to know the facts but at least you will have a better advantage to decide what you should do or not do. 1hope.org, LBAMspray.com, california alliance to stop the spray. We are lucky that some people looked into this. It sure didn’t feel right to be sprayed against our will by our own governement to save someone from profit loss at our expense and expense. but it’s worse than that. Get the facts. You owe it to yourself and your friends and family. You owe it to your children and other peoples children.
