Time to move the Doomsday clock again?

As of this writing, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has set the famous doomsday clock at 5 minutes to midnight. The last time it was advanced was this year (from 7 minutes) was due to global warming concerns plus the North Korean nuclear test. Traditionally, the clock primarily represented the likelihood of nuclear war with Russia.

    Enter Vladimir Putin…

In response to the US announcement to place anti-missile defense systems in Poland and, Mr. Putin has said he will be forced to target missiles at neighboring countries. Presumably this would give him the ability to take out those ballistic missile defenses before attacking the US.

Who could have guessed that Russia might resent the US having the only loaded gun in the neighborhood?

Oh well, the U.S. has not been in the habit of backing down lately so I doubt that is going to happen. I guess we are back to the Cold War games of blowing smoke and hot air at each other without going too far. Of course we will have to place US nukes in East Europe as a response. That should make it all nice and stable again.

Is it time to update the doomsday clock?
