Snake Food

A Phoenix man was sentenced to 90 days in jail for feeding his pet snake. Okay, okay, I admit the pet was a boa constrictor and the food was a 3-week old greased puppy. And some people would argue that this is gross and appalling, yadda, yadda, yadda.

But I would first like to point out that many boa constrictors are finicky eaters and only eat live food. I was the caretaker of a boa some years back and that thing only ate when it wanted too and only live fuzzy things. Most of the time boas are fed rats and mice and maybe the occasional guinea pig.

This is a clear case of mammal-discrimination. How is it fair to rats and mice that they are “acceptable” snake food but puppies are not? Last time I saw a mouse it was quite cute, furry, and had four legs as well. Some people even keep rats as pets.

I would also like to point out that this guy was being rather considerate to the snake. It was a large gulp and he oiled the dog to make it go down smooth. If that is not considerate, I don’t know what is.

Finally, we should also look at this from the snake’s point of view. Here is a happy go lucky boa constrictor that has been waiting weeks before he got his meal. Then he eats a mighty feast and the guy that feeds him gets taken off to jail. How would that make you feel if your butcher gets arrested everytime you eat veal? I think I would be rather disheartened. I wouldn’t stop eating my favorite meats but it would be depressing. So now we have a depressed insecure snake that probably doesn’t know what or when it will be fed again. Now that is cruelty to animals.

  1. My philosophy: if you are a pet that needs to eat other pets, you’re not a pet at all… you’re a wild fucking animal. Sure, cats may want to eat small rodents, but they don’t NEED to. They have cat food. There is no such thing as snake food, you’re just obligated to drop any other pets that happen to be lying around the house into the hideous creatures gaping maw. It’s not right.

Back to the jungle with you, Kaa.

  2. if you read the article then you’d know that the snake was abused. the charges were for the snake not being cared for.

    nice bit of irrationality there.

  3. First of all,
D.Peace, you’re an idiot. Cats eat meat. Dogs eat meat! If they werent living in our homes (or near our garbage cans) they’d kill little bunny’s and Rats and birds and devour them as need be. We’ve just browbeaten them to the point where they eat whatever crap we give them and they survive on it.

    Secondly, for Daniel.
You might have a point, but you cant be sure. The article explains the snake was “neglected”…. and thats it. Perhaps the neglect was an improper enclosure? Well then sir, you’re certainly right.
But maybe the snake was malnourished. I’m fairly sure the OP explained that “Boa’s can be picky eaters”…. and well, if thats the case, then this man was truly trying to take care of his pet.
Since the article does not elaborate, neither of you can be right, 100%

  6. Honestly people get squeamish over the silliest things. My ball pythons won’t eat frozen, the only take live rats and if they get big enough they’ll get larger prey, rabbits, guinea pigs, whatever. Most constrictors can be picky eaters. And lets be honest here folks, there are HUMAN cultures that eat dogs, where’s the difference?

BTW D. Peace, how bout you stop insulting snakes, just cause you may be a chicken doesn’t mean everyone else is, I happen to love all 4 of my snakes so how bout you go back to the jungle instead.

  7. My redtail boa eats only live mice. I give him what he prefers. Surely the bigger he gets. The betr he handles live prey. Ja bt i stay away from rats. They eat anything. Give a small mouse each week. He gets good at eating live prey. And ja the mouses nevr make them sick. Kfc makes people sick.

  10. may the guy should not drop the puppy into hot oil before, but feeding a puppy to a snake in general is absolute no problem to me!
snakes need to eat like any other.
a animal is an animal and there is no significant difference betwen them and their feelings.
do you really think to buy frozen feeders is not involving any cruel to an animal?
they were produced in breeding farms under very less conditions!
will you belive a animal that’s breeded at such a farm had a good life and ever seen daylight till his death?
and what about the killing it’s self, is getting the head smashed or being gassed no pain in any way?
so why not use some unwanted pets to feed your snake and help to reduce the overpopulation instead supporting the raising of a cruel industry that try to make you believe you do going the humane way of feeding?
millions of unwanted dogs being gassed in shelters every year cause there are to much of them!
they will end up in a rendering plant were they will been ground up in a huge grinder to produce fat, tallow and protein powder!
    is that any better?
by an objective view of the whole thing that stands behind i truely can say i would feed absolute everything to my snake no matter what ever it will be.
as long the size will fit and i can get it cheap or even free it will be the snakes next meal
if i had a 16ft burmese and someone offers an adult dog to me i would take it too.
to make some useless into some need full isn’t any bad!
